surroundings of Birmingham, UK.

A live recording made 27/02/2014 straight off the mixing desk. This was the final rehearsal for the D.N.P live debut at City Tavern, Birmingham, UK the following evening.

A few small glitches and errors notably a desk overload at about 15 mins in for a few seconds but that’s the fun and unpredictability of performing live and rehearsing to get it right.

Beatless, desolate, lost sounds. This album was composed entirely using Virtual ANS.

The ANS synthesizer is a photoelectronic musical instrument created by Russian engineer Evgeny Murzin from 1937 to 1957. The technological basis of his invention was the method of graphical sound recording used in cinematography (developed in Russia concurrently with USA), which made it possible to obtain a visible image of a sound wave, as well as to realize the opposite goal—synthesizing a sound from an artificially drawn sound spectrogram. – from Wikipedia

I thought this was an original idea until I discovered that Coil released a triple album of ANS noise back in 2004. Oh well.

D.N.P……Dona Nobis Pacem…..Grant us peace

Doom….I was obsessed with it for a number of years. The first person shooter that really hit the spot and spawned many imitators.

Browsing through the internet one day I found a complete set of original Doom SFX wav files. They were sitting on my hard drive for a while when I thought “lets see what these can do” Feeding them through a sampler and sequencer I created the opening track to this album ‘Deimos Anomaly’, the rest just came naturally.

The rules were simple:-
1. All sounds in the album must originate from a Doom sound effect
2. I can do anything to the sounds e.g. cut em, loop em, slow em down, play em backwards, add effects, etc as long as they are original Doom SFX.

This is the result of my experiment. IDDQD=GOD. All track names are taken from the various levels of the game. IDDQD was the notorious cheat code which made you invincible, hence ‘God’ mode.

Hardcore gamers amongst you will recognise many of the noises contained within, however many sounds have been twisted beyond recognition.

Big ups to Bobby Prince who created the original Doom SFX back in the early 1990s. I hope he likes what I’ve done to his work.
